Why Pressure Treat Wood?

There are many reasons why pressure treated wood is superior to untreated wood. For one, the life of treated lumber can last over 20 years. Additionally, pressure treated wood helps prevent decay due to fungus and insects. This prevents the owner of having to constantly replace or repair boards, which saves money in the long run. A house built with pressure treated wood can potentially increase the value of the home due to lumber durability.

Method of Treatment

Copper azole, also known as CA-C, is the method used by Escue Wood Treated Products. This method became popular in the early 21st century, when restrictions were placed upon the old CCA treatment method. CCA was the original wood treatment method, but now can only be used for farm or ranching purposes. CA-C is environmentally friendly, and incorporates organic compounds that are used to protect food crops. The CA-C method is marketed under the Wolmanized brand name. The standard retention for CA-C is 0.06 lb/ft3 for above ground applications and 0.15 lb/ft3 for ground contact applications. The appearance of the treated wood is greenish in color, which is similar to the look of the CCA treated wood.

The Escue Treated Wood /CA-C Difference

Escue Wood Treated Products use the chemical Copper Azole to preserve wood. The difference between copper azole (CA-C) and other methods is that CA is made up of liquified copper, as opposed to granulated copper. The liquid copper in CA provides for a greater degree of penetration into the wood. In addition to the difference in penetration, the wood we treat has a limited lifetime warranty for durability.

Our treatment method allows for both above ground treatment as well ground contact treatment. Wood preserved with micronized copper azole requires that ALL wood be treated as ground contact, or it doesn’t meet warranty specifications. By treating both ground and above ground, we can pass along the cost reductions to our customers. This allows us to keep the high-quality standards of CA-C treated lumber, while letting our customers decide which level of treatment will suit their needs the best.

Our treatment method requires us to run 98 linear feet of lumber into a pressurized cylinder via lumber carts on a rail track. After closing the door, we pull -23 of vacuum inside the cylinder. We then flood the cylinder with our CA-C chemical until there is no empty space. The pressurization forces the chemical preservative CA-C into the lumber over a period of about an hour. After a pre-determined amount of time, we drain the cylinder and open the doors to remove the now treated lumber. The last step concludes with the lumber drying on our drip pad. Traditionally, it takes 3 days to dry treated lumber. Our method allows our lumber to dry for a period of 4 hours, as opposed to 3 days.
